I’m originally from VA, militias down there are pretty serious and have only gotten more serious in the past few months

That's pretty sweet. I've only ever been a target shooter so I've been looking around here for what to switch to/carry.

Anything in 9/40/45 is adequate for 2-legged threats

Dad used to carry a .44 back in the day

.44spec or mag will do the trick too lol. I rock a .357mag for pocket carry occasionally

I figure my 22LR no matter how accurate isn't sorting I want to trust my life on.

.22lr is better than nothing, but ballistically there’s better plus the reliability of the round can be in question

I’ve always leaned towards 9mm or .40 personally

Same, 9 or .40 is good for self defense. .45 is fine too

It's a break down rifle too so it doesn't quite fit in my back pocket.

If you look around online you can get PD turn in Glock 22s for 275-300. They’re used, but typically barely shot because they were police issue. It’s a full size handgun, but is concealable depending on your body type. It’s also in .40 cal
