Gotcha. You dont need to buy much - you can ferment in any glass or stainless container you might have lying around.

Honey is pretty $$ though

A big pickle jar or steel pot would be sufficient in a pinch.

Now would be a good time to gather wild berries, if youve got a lot of free time on your hands. Melomel (fruity mead) is 👌 👌 👌

Old liquor bottles are great for small batches

My go to recipe is one part honey to five parts water. DAP (diammonium phosphate, yeast nutrient) is a good additive if available, but not necessary.

Boil your water, dissolve your honey and DAP if applicable, aerate the solution by pouring it back and forth a few times, and then pitch yeast

(Pitch at room temp)

Make sure your bubbler is correct as well

Anyhow, diy airlocks are easy to achieve, especially on jars and bottles. Drill a hole in the lid to snugly fit a hose. Run the hose into a cup of water. Done

Starsan is a godsend

Though with mead, a clean piece of cloth covering the top is fine 99% of the time. Honey has antibacterial properties, and any wild yeast from your fruit wont hurt. By the time the honey is gone, the yeast should be able to fend for itself pretty well

In absence of starsan, bleach, bzk, or iodine are sufficient - just needs to be thoroughly rinsed

I'd be cautious with it, had family make stuff only for it to explode in the bottle

In another country where its legal, i distilled some very sweet mead and unintentionally ranthe boiler very hot at the start of the run. It carnelized the sugars which made for a damn good flavor

Iirc i did 4 to 1 water/honey to maximize alcohol content, and there was still honey after the fermentation

so what items are required to make the mead, i can look it up easily but i always prefer to hear it from someone

Youll need: A pot to boil water in, something to ferment in, a hose to siphon with, and bottle(s) /corks to store it afterwards If you want nicer equipment, a carboy, a racking cane, and a bottle capper would be nice

Ingredients - barebones you need honey, water, bakers yeast

Oh, cheesecloth is very convenient when brewing with fruit but definitely not necessary

Blackberry melomel is an excellent place to start. Same basic recipe as above works, just add as many blackberries as you see fit.

My favorite approach is to sanitize some cheesecloth, wrap the berries and crush em, and weigh down the whole bundle at the bottom of the fermenter to keep them immersed.

But you can just mash em up and toss em in, or filter out the juice and leave the solids out entirely

Pectic enzyme is a worthwhile ingredient if youll be fermenting fruit often

It breaks down the pectin into usable carbs, and also makes the wine less cloudy

Not required to get started on mead, but it can improve your game.
