Still should register if you live in a high density area or feel like being honest, you're not risking anything by licensing a radio.

I'd argue that gives the government just a little more money to enforce stuff. It's your decision to weigh risk, whether or not to get your permit.

The UV 82 is more expensive then the one I posted. I like that one because it was dust and drop resistant. The UV 82 is not much more but what makes it better? If it just has a better antenna I see pretty good ones on Amazon for $10-$20

I'd probably say if you're looking for something to have for occasional use or emergencies, the baofeng will be fine. If you're looking to really get into radios, stuff like yaesu, motorola, and kenwood is good, and expensive.

Well the way I'm seeing it currently, I may wind up being more cut out for comms and support rather than frontlines. I will do what it is necessary at the end of the day regardless, but I want to be where I am most useful for efficiency's sake. So if I have the capability to learn and do more I will. I don't mind spending a little more if it means I can learn and do a little more

Anyone know anything about using CHIRP or other alternatives to conventional localized internet data networks? Does it have a limited range, do I need a license? I currently still use flashdrives as part of a sneaker network, but it's a hassle. I don't trust VPNs or TOR, it's all shady and never 100% secure

Someone will have your data unless you have your own end to end encryption. End of the day it's all about who you trust to have it, and anything with a signal or on a public net can be intercepted.
