The Rinos are a favorite of mine. They'll even send text over FRS. It's sorta secure-ish in my mind because it's rare for someone to be monitoring FRS for data packets

I have a yaseu 3200dr in the car with a 57 in whip. Works fantastic. And a FTM400xdr at home

Here are some of my radios. Aside from the Baofeng UV-82HP, the rest can do analog, P25Conventional, and P25Trunked. Three of the portables and the mobile base station they are sitting on can do multi-band (136MHz through 861/870MHz). The portable off to the right is a single band, UHF-High only. AES and DES encryption is also possible with all except the Baofeng.

What kind of hearing protection can we use and still hear our radios?
Message permalink: 708139542305046589
Or anything that would integrate with a BF-F8HP
Message permalink: 708139629538181182
Without a crazy price tag
Message permalink: 708139660400001054
I was thinking about that, wasn't sure about it tho! I'll try it out
Message permalink: 708142873014697994
I found ear plugs that have a hole for low decibel noise that is compatible with some radios, gonna try that out
Message permalink: 708145600486572083
Well i went with the better than no Comms route, until i can budget out a better one.

I know i know, its baofeng

@Yeetasaurus Rex - Nothing wrong with starting with basic.

Ideas for a cheap mobile that has the same coverage of freq as a baofeng. Setting my second rig and need radio and antenna

@LoudPills - http://www.miklor.com has a crapton of cheaper radios reviewed on his site. This is a great resource for insight and tutorials on basically anything cheap radio.

@[VA] JediComms that base station has a unity in it? I found a guy in Oregon with a cheap unity mobile but heās a dumb cbār and wonāt ship it. Got it from an ex-railroad police car he bought at salvage for the hemi engine.
Message permalink: 708496936201748541
@redbeard - Yes, it is an XG100M Unity. Great radio.
Message permalink: 708499598242480139
Yeah I want one. I might try calling the closest UPS store to that guy and arrange a drop off. See if I can send them a payment to hand him when he drops off the radio. Only wants like $250 for it with the good control head
Message permalink: 708500055857954907
@redbeard - You mean the touch screen like mine here?
Message permalink: 708500479373606972
Message permalink: 708500646327746571
Yeah pretty sure it has the same head
Message permalink: 708502098454773802
Even if it didnāt idgaf I just want a unity
Message permalink: 708502255174942741
@redbeard - There are two control heads - CH721, which is a "dumb" CH and limits the MRU to hold one personality. The touch screen, CH100, is a "smart" CH and allows the MRU to hold 10 personalities. The CH100 is pretty cool but It can be fickle. I had one on the base station but it wouldn't play nicely so I finally swapped it for a 721.

My only issue is being able to program trunked systems for monitoring. I wonder if there is any hacks like there are for Motorola
Message permalink: 708505580708560947
I was told even an older radio like a 7100 has blocks in the software for major trunked systems like Ohio marcs
Message permalink: 708505741635354726
@redbeard - It isn't the radio, it is the radio programming software that makes it "impossible". Without system admin permission for the particular trunked system, you won't get a pass.

Is it legal to hack your HAM to communicate on MURS, CB, FRS/GMRS frequencies as long as you don't transmit? Or is mere possession a crime?
Message permalink: 708558388719779911
@Deleted User constitutionally no
Message permalink: 708559003353088050
@Deleted User - The FCC has regulations about transmissions/transmitters, not reception/receivers. Any radio can receive anything it can tune in and hear.....but if that radio is not type certified to transmit on a particular frequency and you do, then your action can be considered illegal.

Anyone use a BF-F8HP When I plug in a headset it plays audio out of the headset and the integrated speaker Wanted to know if that's a fault or if there's a way around it
Message permalink: 708617537180663838
I have the UV-82HP and don't recall it ever doing that.

Yeah walmart 25 bucks. Smart phone with android. Tracphone. Service is 20 a month for unlimited talk and text, with 1G data. 2 G is 25, 3G is 30.

Message permalink: 708860713015312505
Ohh my bad.
Message permalink: 708860987226325112
The tracphone from walmart I spoke of, has a removable battery. Right now you can go in mask and gloves, fully covered, and get one...no big deal.

Ended up going with the 58 inch mfj 1414 dual band for the mobile 2 meter cheap rig. Picked it up for 38$

Ham antennas are a legit joke. I bought a comet dual band that was rated at 250W and proceeded to melt it in half while driving and talking on my 100W radio.

Is there a way to connect a 2 pin connector to the aux port of my electronic ear muffs and just use a clip on mic?
Message permalink: 709520124016853023
Something like this but instead of the ear piece itās an aux plug
Message permalink: 709521250317369415
Some of the electronic hearing protection will turn off the external microphones when you plug in, so you can't hear ambient anymore

Which ones do that? All the good ones don't.... peltor, sordin, etc.
Message permalink: 709534821248008192
Oh, you mean electronic earmuffs
Message permalink: 709534998683844649
Yeah, that's what he was asking about. Some of them do still work
Message permalink: 709535057974394971
The howard leights will also mount to the ARC rail on a helmet I think
Message permalink: 709535185904861294
Peltors will as well...
Message permalink: 709535237004066856
And you can get a set of used peltors for a few hundred, almost not worth trying to janky a setup together.
Message permalink: 709535374594015233
Pretty big price difference though.
Message permalink: 709535403295768586
I have to equip two people, so even used that gets super expensive
Message permalink: 709535616315949066
Just get a lapel mic with in ear and put it under the muffs, bunch of people I know do that.
Message permalink: 709535906637414410
@Rawhide thatās exactly what I was trying to do. Thanks!!. I have Howard Leight impact sports like in the video and I have rifleman opmod muffs I got off OpticsPlanet. Not sure if it would work well with the opmods but Iāll test them out.
Message permalink: 709552825176162355
@EDDSkitz Iāll try that out too. Iām going to see which is more comfortable
Message permalink: 709554871522557962
> Something like this but instead of the ear piece itās an aux plug @RooftopKorean I'm running that thing lol with some sure fire ear plugs that fit the tip
Message permalink: 709581520469491782
Gunshot blocking electronic earmuffs that double as radio headphones would be mint to have.
Message permalink: 709582939926691902
@Deleted User pretty sure thatās a thing
Message permalink: 709583123322634241
@[MS] Foxtrot795 you're probably right. Not super high priority for me right now since I got some cheap hearing protection that does the job.
Message permalink: 709583429036933193
Same. I wouldnāt mind having a pair š
Message permalink: 709583753932046346
It exists but I see them for like $600 š
Message permalink: 709586308825088082
My electronic ear muffs cost $30-$40 then I just clip on a mic and plug the aux into them and it works about the same lol
Message permalink: 709586575536685107
@[CA] SoyBoi that might actually work pretty well lol. Donāt need to wear earmuffs under the helmet just some light plugs lol
Message permalink: 709588213852930068
āSonic ear defendersā
Message permalink: 709588291812589644
$25ish for the plug and mic, a hell of a lot cheaper than some 600 headsets lol I gotta save where I can lol
Message permalink: 709588483940810846
I have those surefires already, I didnāt think to use them that way. Thatās fucking ingenuitive lol
Message permalink: 709588897331544125
I saw a thread about it (but I had to dig lol)
Message permalink: 709595545827672096
I meant headphones that plug into a radio, not themselves act as a radio.
Message permalink: 709649611262001172
Can someone show me to a dual band antenna for 2m/440 that is actually resonant on both bands?

Nagoya NA-320A Just make sure you buy a real one, there are fakes out there that suck.
Message permalink: 709853667548987392
@EDDSkitz experiencing the fake as we speak
Message permalink: 709861339589247056

Message permalink: 709910845366206529
Peltor comtac's can... you just need the right PTT for your radio. They make some without comms that are much cheaper, but are just electronic earmuffs

Correct
