@countrygirl in some respects sure. Using rifles for splints for example or tree limbs instead of actual soft board splints or SAM splints isn't necessarily bad as long as you know how to splint properly

Wound packing has multiple things being done at once, it prevents blood from exciting the body and it expands as it absorbs blood which puts pressure against the blood vessel bleeding which then stops the bleeding.

It was not fun digging that pellet out his foot, went 90% way thru

But as with anything else there's a time and place for it all. I'm not gonna pack a wound that isn't spraying blood profusely for example if i can get away with simply putting direct pressure and wrapping it. There's a whole bunch of articles on proper and improper use of tq's and wound packing gauze
