There is more to it than whether or not his force was appropriate and his life was threatened in the moment, keep that in mind. He very well may still be held criminally liable.

If you started the altercation, *all* of the force involved after is your fault.

It doesn't matter the law states if you Retreat after that after you escalated it and then they continue to increase violence against you while you're retreating then it gets reversed back to them getting in trouble and not the defendant

Intent and escalation are big factors

None of this is that clear cut. The force from the skateboard/knife crowd is clearly an attack, and he responds in kind, that by itself *looks* justified, by the context matters

They were putting themselves in a dangerous situation and potentially provoking the crowd, though a typical reasonable person still wouldn't violently attack someone like that. Being faced with both a skateboard which is surprisingly dangerous, and a knife, he certainly had the needed danger to justify self defense. He attempted to get away, resorted to using non lethal first, then when there was no other option left he used lethal. It's just a matter of whether or not they interpret them as being the aggressor. The video didn't seem to show them threatening anyone though. Unless it was illegal to carry those particular weapons in that particular state (idk their laws) then I don't see any reasonable level of intent to cause harm, and all of the escalation up to the point of the shooting was done by the crowd.

If they asked them to leave the monument alone without threatening, I'd say it's pretty clear cut self defense. Any amount of brandishing or credible threat, things are murky. It also depends on the particular judge, and whether or not they want to crucify a gun owner.

Considering it's not uncommon for judges to blatantly violate the law and constitution to serve their own agenda
