itll get about halfway then the extractor slips off
Message permalink: 715671866328612864
i didnt know if it was the extractor itself or the spring
Message permalink: 715671953272209570
take a pic of the extractor without a round in it
Message permalink: 715672015138193418
aight
Message permalink: 715672045035454585
also, do the cases look ok? like no scrapes on them after firing or anything?
Message permalink: 715672598461153342
Message permalink: 715672638688854088
spent case looks fine too
Message permalink: 715672721522032691
yeah my bet would be extractor spring for sure then
Message permalink: 715672777633431643
extractor looks fine as far as i can tell
Message permalink: 715672821598257183
its a bitch to get a good picture with the shitty focus
Message permalink: 715672891689009212
Message permalink: 715673240894439425
here maybe this one is better
Message permalink: 715673243075215390
yeah thats better
Message permalink: 715673422767718400
numrich gun parts most likely has the spring for it, the extractor looks find, but they likely have the extractor for a few bucks too if you want to replace bothj
Message permalink: 715673567446040604
what gun is it
Message permalink: 715673596634071191
its a remington model 514, mid 50s
Message permalink: 715673648387850240
nice little gun and its dead accurate from when ive shot it from what i can tell

Message permalink: 715673932950405193
i figured that was the problem but i wanted to get a second opinion
Message permalink: 715674222286077962
it says fitting required on the extractor what does that mean?
Message permalink: 715674345610936380
you might need to file something down a little bit if it doesnt fit just right
Message permalink: 715674457057788045
ah, seems like itll be a bitch to replace with such small parts
Message permalink: 715674694849921137
spring will be easy enough, I would bet you wont have to do anything to the extractor but if it were me id just order them both just in case
Message permalink: 715674824130953237
yeah i personally wouldmt like having to have that brand new looking part on a worn old bolt, kinda ruins the look but oh well if it works that kinda all that matters
Message permalink: 715675165681516644
honestly it would be hard to believe that the extractor is that worn on a 22.
Message permalink: 715675337458974892
well i mean it is from the 50s, no telling how many rounds have been put through it. but if it was the extractor would it not grab at all or just barely and not go halfway back before slipping?
Message permalink: 715675640270946437
if you wanna test it, hold the extractor in and eject a round. If it still slips off then its the extractor
Message permalink: 715676014445068288
just dont accidentally shoot it lol
Message permalink: 715676155373551646
i was using a spent round dont worry
Message permalink: 715677612873351228
and sometimes it doesnt grab at all
Message permalink: 715677681454153811
forgot to add that
Message permalink: 715677699393192128
@squidsoup0
Message permalink: 715677854536302703
but when it does only halfway eject i can hold down on it and it can eject
Message permalink: 715677995729158216
and sometimes it doesnt eject even when holding it
Message permalink: 715678759956775044
so it can slip off even if you hold the extractor all the way in?
Message permalink: 715678834740953108
if thats the case then id definitely order than new extractor with it.. and maybe take the bolt apart and make sure theres nothing stuck in there or something not letting it go in all the way
Message permalink: 715679012847878165
the extractor isnt taken apart with the rest of the bolt
Message permalink: 715679256813764668
its sepereate from the rest
Message permalink: 715679310979268653
to take the extractor apart you dont gotta take the bolt apart
Message permalink: 715679519134056558
oh, well if youve done that already then it sounds like it might actually be worn enough to need replacing. maybe material is worn away from the tip enough that it barely grabs the rim
Message permalink: 715679807655903235
thats what ive been thinking, my grandpa ran by and i asked him he also thinks its the extractor, said the spring felt fine
Message permalink: 715680138250944612
yeah he mustve shot the shit out of that thing
Message permalink: 715680208170254460
i asked my dad and he said its been like that as long as he can remember
Message permalink: 715680438181691394
you could probably file part of it down to let it close further into the bolt in the mean time
Message permalink: 715680455231275079
whatever part of it stops it from moving further inward you could take a tiny bit off until it extracts, it looks like theres still room left at the tip to move further onto the rim
Message permalink: 715680657149395154
could be that whoever did the fitting on the original didnt get it quite right
Message permalink: 715680769439301702
i dunno bout filing part of it down, i dont have a file, i have some sandpaper which would probably work, so maybe the bolt and extractor is just fine, it just was never fitted right?
Message permalink: 715680911718613043
if its been like that forever then that could be. One way or another its the extractor or spring though. should just be a couple minutes work and the only risk is having to replace the extractor anyway. Its not gonna cause any damage to anything else though.
Message permalink: 715681248814563408
well if it already doesnt extract i cant make it any worse
Message permalink: 715681386740187136
exactly, if it was mine id do it lol. just make sure you figure out which surface is the one that hits the bolt and keeps it from moving inward further
Message permalink: 715681553870487603
can ya explain what you mean, im no expert on gun smithin and all
Message permalink: 715681869328416788
so, when the spring is pressing on the extractor, its pushing it inward toward the center of the bolt. theres a surface on the extractor the touches the bolt keeping it from moving inward further. if you take some of that surface off, the extractor will be able to move in a little further, letting the hook on the extractor grab more of the case
Message permalink: 715682130927026287
rim*
Message permalink: 715682146416853162
my guess would be this surface
Message permalink: 715682427716239430
i took the bolt out and manually held a case in and it looks like it doesnt reach all the way to the back of the extractor
Message permalink: 715682938033012887
see this unused part of the extactor hook, that is how far you need it to go in further when taking that surface down
Message permalink: 715683220003487765
might need to open it in a browser to see it close enough
Message permalink: 715683345400332314
so 22 shorts supposedly work better than longs
Message permalink: 715683622790889623
i havent tested it
Message permalink: 715683874017116262
since 22s are blowback, that could be because it doesnt create enough pressure to expand the brass into the chamber, so the pressure from the round is just pushing the case out by itself. But I would test that first.
Message permalink: 715683970360147990
i think that covers just about anything it could possibly be lol. Go down the list and see what works
Message permalink: 715684774890569770
im gonna get some shorts tommorow and test those in it and ill let ya know
Message permalink: 715685106655952936
cool, sounds good. Let me know how it goes
Message permalink: 715688881651187822
im curious what its gonna be now
Message permalink: 715688946683871294
Next couple parts ordered. Vltor a5 tube and 3.8 buffer, and geissele rifle length spring
Message permalink: 715705883216052295
Nice man
Message permalink: 715706624852885524
For some reason the vltor 3.8 is back ordered everywhere like 8+ months but i found out they use mil spec weights, so I got the next size up. Gonna swap the weights and keep the tungsten ones handy
Message permalink: 715709336306974783
That’ll work. Vltor A5 is the way for sure
Message permalink: 715710589057630208
Gonna see if anyone around me drills and pins gas blocks. From looking around, it seems it's cheaper to pay a pro than it is to buy an slr jig
Message permalink: 715710986958667936
Anyone know if I should be buying a rifle in 300 Norma or 338 Norma vs 300 win mag and 338 lapua with the military transitioning their cartridges?
Message permalink: 715727527489830912
300 wm is hard to beat
Message permalink: 715727639242997772
And 338 Lapua is pretty good
Message permalink: 715727714610577468
But the Norma calibers are better
Message permalink: 715727748298965013
And apparently have military support moving forward
Message permalink: 715727787390009447
Since the military just adopted norma, it might be the way to go. People who are into long range would know more though
Message permalink: 715728463050440726
338 Norma is basically 338 lapua optimized
Message permalink: 715728660547502102
Not sure on 300 tho
Message permalink: 715728682106224662
.mil uses both so 🤷🏻‍♂️
Message permalink: 715729051280605264
They’re transitioning from it tho
Message permalink: 715729430177120306
.300wm and .338 Lapua are likely easier to find and easier to find reloading components for
Message permalink: 715729435411742791
For now
Message permalink: 715729452155535396
That’s basically brass only tho
Message permalink: 715729505117011969
They use the same bullets
Message permalink: 715729528994922507
Usually
Message permalink: 715729555251265656
300win mag is going to be around for a good while. And either way, in the quantities they make it for .mil, it doesn’t make it much cheaper civ side
Message permalink: 715729940624179262
Good point, just wondering if 300 Norma is that much better and has the potential to make it more common
Message permalink: 715730596575445063
Aren’t the 300 Norma rifles a sockcum contract anywats?
Message permalink: 715730863425454130
Or am I thinking of something else
Message permalink: 715730899013992458
Yes but big army and maybe marine corps picked them up too
Message permalink: 715731012205674540
But somebody kept old calibers I think
Message permalink: 715731073090453543
Marine corps is running all of it rn IIRC, except 300norma, fairly certain that’s socom/usasoc exclusive?
Message permalink: 715731502662418483
300win mag is widely used
Message permalink: 715731597122469940
Then .338, then 300norma
Message permalink: 715731651598090301
And honestly the difference between any of those doesn’t justify the mil price of buying new rifles, Ammo, SL3, gauges, parts, tools, etc
Message permalink: 715731793642258502
True
Message permalink: 715732029106290700
Just read up on it a bit and 300 Norma is 338 Norma necked down to take 308 bullets
Message permalink: 715732107049173032
More compared to 338 than 300 win mag
Message permalink: 715732147628933190
Pushing a 230 Gn bullet 3000 FPS
Message permalink: 715732214767157308
If you don’t have to, I wouldn’t stick to mil calibers tbh, for long gun stuff
Message permalink: 715733311791824988
